Starting from the Schönthal, Langerwehe you leave the main road and ride directly into the Meroder Wald. The route leads you mainly around the Meroder Wald which transitions in to the the Hürtgenwald. In terms of environment you’re just on the edge of the Eifel where altitude differences are limited and the area transitions from built area to wooded area. You ride through/past villages like Langerwehe, Schevenhütte and Merode where you notice little of the daily hustle and bustle. The view doesn’t reach far due to the slight elevation changes and the view is a mix of farmland, small villages and dense forest.
MTB route Schlossrunde runs mainly along the edge of the Meroder Wald alternating between paved roads and wide forest trails. The forest trails are usually a few meters wide with a layer of gravel on it. There are only a few single trails on this route with an accumulative length of approximately 800m. These are light meandering trails with clear view and includes one flat trail with a lot of exposed roots which lacks flow. You have to watch out for oncoming traffic (especially on the singletrails) since the route can also be ridden in the opposite direction.
Even though the MTB route Schlossrunde is classified as easy route there are still a lot of routes that are easier, but barely any of them are in this region. With two long climbs spread over 18km you feel the tension in your legs for quite some time but the limited steepness makes that you can ride it at your own pace. During the climbs you usually ride on paved roads or wide forest paths with gravel which makes it easier. The climbs are not so steep that rear wheel slips in the gravel and while descending you rarely come across sharp turns. On the technical side you are also barely challenged with the exception of a short trail with exposed tree roots where speed and line choice are somewhat of importance.

Mountain biking in the Eifel region is beautiful and the MTB route Schlossrude just raises the corner of the veil of opportunities in this area. You can find denser afforestation, greater altitude difference, more beautiful views and more challenging trails when you go deeper in this area. I just find that the MTB route Schlossrunde specifically lacks on area of trails. The large amount of paved roads do in my opinion not suit in this area, it seems that riding through the Meroder Wald is somewhat avoided. The offroad trails are wide, long and even somewhat boring at times. I definitely cannot speak of challenging trails here and there is a lot more possible looking at adjacent trails (which are not part of the route) that could be included.
MTB route Schlossrunde one of the easiest MTB routes in the Eifel with only 18km and 279 ascending meters. This route takes you along the edge and partly through the Meroder Wald which also connects to the Hürtgenwald. The transition from built and agricultural area to afforestation is clearly visible while remaining quite peaceful. Looking at the distance and trails of this route you can say that this is definitely a novice MTB route. On this short route are only a handful of trails that generate the feeling of mountain biking. The majority of the route consists of paved roads or long wide forest paths. This, however, goes well with the ability to ride the route in the opposite direction. On a fitness level the MTB route Schlossrunde delivers a track that can be challenging enough for a starting mountainbiker but this is only a warming-up for the experienced mountain biker. However, this route is not directly connected to the other nearby mountain bike trails.
